                                        About Leela Game

Ancient India Origin

Leela game originated over 5,000 years ago in India, with its earliest mentions tied to the yogic and tantric traditions. Its creation is attributed to saints and sages who sought to convey profound spiritual teachings through a simple yet engaging format. The word Leela in Sanskrit translates to “divine play” or “cosmic game,” reflecting the Hindu and Vedantic belief that life itself is a manifestation of the divine’s playful energy.

The game was designed as a metaphorical representation of life’s journey, where the board symbolizes the karmic cycle and the player’s movement represents the soul’s progression through various states of existence. It was not merely a game of entertainment but a sacred tool for meditation, self-reflection, and spiritual growth.

The Board: A Map of Consciousness.

The Leela board is a grid of numbered  triangles  each one representing a specific state of being or experience. The rows correspond to Seven Chakras: The subtle energy centers in the human body.

 Snakes and Arrows

 • The snakes signify the pull of ego ignorance, which drag the player downward.

 • The arrows symbolize virtues, which elevate the soul to higher states.

The dice used in the game represent time and chance, emphasizing the unpredictability of life’s journey and the divine will.

Evolution Over Time

Leela is often regarded as the spiritual ancestor of the children's game of Snakes and Ladders, which was simplified and secularized during the British colonial period in India. While Snakes and Ladders became a game for children, Leela retained its spiritual depth and meditative purpose.

Rediscovery in Modern Times

In the late 20th century, the game saw a resurgence thanks to efforts by Harish Johari, an Indian author, artist, and spiritual teacher. Johari adapted the ancient teachings of Leela into a format accessible to contemporary audiences by creating detailed commentary on the game’s spiritual significance. His book, The Yoga of Snakes and Arrows: The Leela of Self-Knowledge, became a key resource for understanding and playing the game.

Spiritual Lessons.

Leela is not just a game—it is a mirror reflecting the journey of the soul. Every roll of the dice and movement on the board invites players to reflect on the messages in context of their life choices, emotional patterns, and aspiration. The message is always relevant. If it does not resonate right away, give it some time to reflect on the message letter.

Modern Adaptations and Relevance

In recent years, the Leela game has been adapted for various platforms, including digital formats and workshops. Its appeal lies in its universal wisdom, which transcends cultural and religious boundaries. Many modern practitioners use it as a tool for:
